Toposar Dosage

What Is the Recommended Toposar Dosage for Testicular Cancer?

The usual Toposar dosage for treating cancer of the testicles is highly individualized, and may range from 50 to 100 mg per m2 a day for 5 days to 100 mg per m2 a day every other day for 3 doses (days 1, 3, and 5 of a treatment cycle). People with kidney or liver disease are normally given lower doses of Toposar.

Toposar can cause significant side effects, especially bone marrow depression (when the bone marrow is unable to produce adequate amounts of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets). After receiving Toposar for five days, you will be given a break in treatment to allow your body to recover from Toposar side effects. The period of dosing followed by a break is known as a treatment cycle. Treatment cycles are repeated every three to four weeks, after you have recovered from potentially serious side effects. Your healthcare provider will tell you how many cycles of treatment you need.

General Information on Using Toposar

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Toposar include the following:

  • Toposar comes as a solution that is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion (a slow injection into a vein). It is usually given once a day or every other day for up to five days, followed by a three- to four-week break.

  • This medication is given in combination with other chemotherapy medicines.

  • Toposar is given slowly, over at least 30 to 60 minutes.

  • You will receive your injection by a trained healthcare provider in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital or clinic.

  • Your healthcare provider may recommend you take certain other medication before your infusion to help prevent certain Toposar side effects.

  • Toposar solution can irritate the skin. If the medicine accidentally comes in contact with the skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water.

  • For this drug to work properly, it must be used as prescribed. It is important to keep your appointments to receive Toposar, as it works best if given on schedule. However, you may need to miss an infusion if you are experiencing potentially serious side effects.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage of Toposar, please talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
