Tarceva Drug Interactions

Tarceva Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Tarceva is combined with any of the drugs mentioned above.

Antacids
Antacids may decrease the amount of Tarceva absorbed from your stomach into your body, potentially making it less effective. If you take antacids during Tarceva treatment, take the antacid at least three hours before or three hours after your Tarceva dosage.

Corticosteroids
Combining Tarceva with a corticosteroid may increase the risk for bleeding, including potentially life-threatening bleeding of the digestive tract. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely if you take these drugs together.

CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The body breaks down Tarceva using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Medications known as CYP 3A4 inducers can increase the activity of these enzymes. Thus, combining Tarceva with one of these drugs may decrease the level of Tarceva in your body, potentially making it less effective.

It is generally recommended that Tarceva not be combined with strong CYP 3A4 inducers. If such a combination cannot be avoided, the dose of Tarceva may need to be increased.

CYP 3A4 Inhibitor Medications
The body breaks down Tarceva using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Medications known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors can decrease the activity of these enzymes. Thus, combining Tarceva with one of these drugs may increase the level of Tarceva in your body, potentially increasing your risk for side effects. The dose of Tarceva may need to be decreased if it is taken in combination with a CYP 3A4 inhibitor.

H2 blockers
H2 blockers may decrease the amount of Tarceva absorbed from the stomach into the body, which could decrease its effectiveness. If you need an H2 blocker during Tarceva treatment, take your Tarceva dose 10 hours after an H2 blocker, but also at least 2 hours before the next H2 blocker dose.
