When trying to stop smoking cigarettes with the nicotine lozenge, your dosage will depend on how soon after you wake up that you have your first cigarette of the day. Treatment with this lozenge typically lasts 12 weeks, during which you will gradually decrease the number of lozenges you use each day to slowly wean your body off nicotine.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of the Nicotine LozengeYour initial dose of the nicotine lozenge (Nicorette® Lozenge) will depend on how soon after waking up you normally smoke your first cigarette of the day. The dose is then slowly reduced to gradually wean your body off nicotine.
Following the recommended dosing guidelines for the nicotine lozenge will improve your chances of successfully quitting smoking.
Nicotine Lozenge Dosing Guidelines for Smoking CessationThe nicotine lozenge comes in 2-mg and 4-mg strengths. You should use the same strength for your entire 12 weeks of treatment.
People who normally smoke their first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking up should use 4-mg nicotine lozenges. People who normally smoke their first cigarette more than 30 minutes after waking up should use 2-mg nicotine lozenges. The recommended nicotine lozenge dosage for both the 2-mg and 4-mg strengths is:
- One lozenge every one to two hours for the first six weeks (weeks 1 through 6), then
- One lozenge every two to four hours for three weeks (weeks 7 through 9), then
- One lozenge every four to eight hours for three weeks (weeks 10 through 12).
Pick a "quit day" and start using nicotine lozenges on that day. Try your best to not smoke, but keep trying, even if you slip up.
Using nicotine lozenges for the complete 12 weeks of treatment will increase your chances of successfully quitting smoking. If you continue to have cravings or feel you still need to use nicotine lozenges longer than 12 weeks, talk to your healthcare provider.
