This medication comes in the form of a gum that releases nicotine as it is chewed. The amount of gum you chew each day is slowly decreased over 12 weeks (or sometimes longer), which helps gradually wean your body off nicotine.

Nicorette Gum Dosage Guidelines
Nicorette Gum comes in 4-mg and 2-mg strengths. The strength you use will be based on how soon each morning you smoke your first cigarette. Continue to use this strength for your entire 12 weeks of treatment.
People who smoke within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning should use Nicorette 4-mg gum. People who smoke the first cigarette of the day more than 30 minutes after waking up should use the 2-mg gum. The recommended Nicorette Gum dosage for both the 4-mg and 2-mg gum is as follows:
- Weeks 1 through 6: chew one piece of gum every one to two hours
- Weeks 7 through 9: chew one piece of gum every two to four hours
- Weeks 10 through 12: chew one piece of gum every four to eight hours.
Pick a "quit day" and start using Nicorette Gum on that day. Try your best not to smoke, but keep trying, even if you don't succeed.
Using Nicorette Gum for the complete 12 weeks of treatment will increase your chances of successfully quitting smoking. If you continue to have cravings or feel you still need to use Nicorette Gum longer than 12 weeks, talk to your healthcare provider.
