Can You Chew Nicorette Gum for Many Years?

Nicorette® Gum (nicotine gum) is a nonprescription drug used to help people quit smoking. Your dose of this medicine will depend on how many cigarettes you smoke each day. Your dosage is then slowly decreased over 12 weeks to help reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Some people are curious about using this product indefinitely, asking the question, "Can you chew Nicorette Gum for many years?"

Using Nicorette Gum for the complete 12 weeks of treatment will increase your chances of successfully quitting smoking. However, you should not use this gum for longer than 12 weeks. Nicorette Gum contains nicotine, which is addictive, and you may become dependent on using it. Talk to your healthcare provider if you continue to have cravings or feel you still need to use Nicorette Gum longer than 12 weeks.
