More Detail on Nicotrol NS Drug Interactions

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Nicotrol NS is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Benzodiazepines
If you take a benzodiazepine, you may experience more sedation and drowsiness from it when you stop smoking. Your healthcare provider may need to decrease your benzodiazepine dosage.

Beta Agonists
Your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dose of your beta agonist medication when you stop smoking or when you start using Nicotrol NS. Talk to your healthcare provider about your plans for smoking cessation.

Beta Blockers
Beta blockers may be more effective at decreasing blood pressure and heart rate after you quit smoking. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely when you stop smoking, and may need to decrease your beta blocker dosage.

Cimetidine
Cimetidine may increase your nicotine blood levels. Talk to your healthcare provider about possible alternatives to cimetidine while you use Nicotrol NS. Similar medications, such as ranitidine (Zantac®), are not likely to interact with nicotine products.

Clozapine
When you stop smoking, your clozapine blood levels may increase. However, because it contains nicotine, Nicotrol NS may decrease clozapine levels. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely or check your clozapine levels with a simple blood test when you start using Nicotrol NS.

Decongestants
If you use a decongestant medication, it may take longer for Nicotrol NS to be absorbed. This means it might take longer for you to notice the effects of Nicotrol NS.
