If you are using the nicotine lozenge (Nicorette® Lozenge), avoid eating or drinking anything for 15 minutes before using the lozenge, or while it is in your mouth. Any food or drink before or during use may decrease the amount of nicotine absorbed into your body.
Also, do not chew or swallow nicotine lozenges, and try not to swallow the medication as it dissolves. Allow the lozenge to slowly dissolve in your mouth, over 20 to 30 minutes. The dosage and number of lozenges you use each day will depend on how soon after you wake up in the morning that you smoke a cigarette. This amount is slowly decreased over a 12-week period, which helps to gradually wean you off of your nicotine dependence.
