Lung Cancer Home > Generic Hycamtin

The patents for Hycamtin (topotecan) have expired, and there is now a generic version of the IV formulation. However, the capsules are still not available in generic form, and it is unclear when they are to be expected to be made.

Can I Buy Generic Hycamtin?

Hycamtin® (topotecan) is a prescription chemotherapy medication. It comes as an oral capsule (approved for treating lung cancer) or as an intravenous medication (approved for treating lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer). Hycamtin is part of a group of medications called topoisomerase I inhibitors.
Brand-name Hycamtin is made by GlaxoSmithKline. However, the patents for this medication have expired, and the IV formulation of Hycamtin is available in generic form.

Availability of Generic Hycamtin

Like brand-name Hycamtin, generic topotecan is available in 4-mg single-dose vials designed to be mixed with sterile water for injection. It is made by various generic manufacturers, such as:
  • Amide Pharmaceutical, Inc.
  • APP Pharmaceuticals
  • GlaxoSmithKline
  • Sagent Pharmaceuticals
  • Three Rivers Pharmaceuticals.

Is Generic Topotecan as Good as Hycamtin?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AP" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. Generic topotecan products all have "AP" ratings, meaning they should be equivalent to Hycamtin
