Two tests commonly used for lung cancer screening are a chest x-ray and sputum cytology. While these tests may catch lung cancer early, they may also lead to false-negative or false-positive results. Also, there is no good evidence that screening for lung cancer using chest x-ray or sputum cytology reduces lung cancer mortality. Your doctor can advise you about your risk for lung cancer and your need for lung cancer screening tests.
